Let’s talk….. BIRTH

Let’s talk…birth stories.

Experience is the best teacher and with the abundance of contradictory facts out there, I find it settling to learn and listen to real life experiences. (Keeping in mind everyone is different)

Help a mum to be out, by sharing your stories in the comments below. Here’s a few questions to get you started:

My labour was…….. min/hours/days

I had a birth plan……

I USED my birth plan…..

I took some sort of pain relief offered…..

During labour I swore I’d never have another child (but I did)……

    6) it’s instense but I loved it so much I became a birth photographer

  2. My labour was 21hours the first time and about 2 hours the second!

I had a birth plan.. Not a written one, but an idea of what I wanted.

I USED my birth plan.. LOL no

I took some sort of pain relief offered.. the first time I had gas, pethadine shot and epidural. The second I had time for nothing.

During labour I swore I’d never have another child (but I did… YES multiple times

If I could tell you ONE thing about birth it would be… Contractions don’t stop after the baby comes out. You’ll often have them days later, especially if breastfeeding!

  3. 1st- 36 hour labour, epidural after 30 hours, emergency c section, 4.8kg

    2nd- I elected a c section, 3.3kg (had GD with my second)

No birth plan really for the first, just let the midwives take control. Bad idea. Bad experience. Second was a LOT better!! I was in control!!

My advice? Take the meds! And take them before you’re passing out from the pain!

    1. What an experience Kat! Totally agree with you regarding the meds. I had a similar experience with my first. It’s your birth, your story. You control it!
      Thanks for sharing xx

  4. I didn’t have a birth plan with either of my babies.

I only had GAS with my first labour but it then progressed into an emergency csec.

I swore then I would never have anymore children but I went back for more hahahahaha

One thing I’d say is stay firm and ask for what you want!

    1. Haha Mel. I yelled it so loud multiple times. Yet after a while you realise it’s all worth it!
Thanks so much for sharing xx

  5. My labour was…10 hours

I had a birth plan but it didn’t go to plan baby was induced 2 weeks early. Wasn’t allowed the water birth I’d hoped for.

I took some sort of pain relief offered. Well I took everything offered. Epidural gas and air when thatbstopped working!!

During labour I swore I’d never have another child but in100% will. For the sake of a few days of pain of being uncomfortable I don’t think about it now!

If I could tell you ONE thing about birth it would be don’t be scared. I was so scared and had many panic attacks over it. But you cope! Your body is designed to do this. And once you get through it you have the best reward x

    1. Great tip Danielle! The unknown first time around can be scary, but you summed it up so well!
      Thanks for sharing xx

  6. My labour was……..
    3 hours

    I had a birth plan……
    Nope

    I USED my birth plan…..

I took some sort of pain relief offered…..
    Has
During labour I swore I’d never have another child….
Nope, I was lucky and had an easy labor so I wasn’t turned off

If I could tell you ONE thing about birth it would be……
Once it starts it doesn’t stop, so trust your body and your instincts, and once that baby is in your arms the pain will be forgotten

    1. Sounds like a quick and beautiful story Ebony-Rose. The moment you hold your baby for the first time is truly magical!
Thanks so much for sharing xx

  7. My labour was…a Csection

I had a birth plan……yes as she fipped at 32 weeks

I USED my birth plan…..yes and no

I took some sort of pain relief offered…..spinal block

During labour I swore I’d never have another child (but I did)…… I only have one

If I could tell you ONE thing about birth it would be…… Do what feels right for you!

    1. Such an important message Linda. We are all so different and everyone’s “right” is too!
Thanks so much for sharing xx

  8. 4 hours. Didn’t have a birth plan other than to get baby out safely. Used Gas, was open to accepting other pain relief but baby was born 45 mins after parking at the hospital so no time.

Labour did not put me off having another. It actually proved I could do it again but thankfully I had no complications.

Danielle who just commented has said what I feel. I heard so many horror stories but everyone is different. Try not to be afraid 😁

    1. What a quick delivery! You really do realise how capable your body is after birth. It’s amazing!
      Thanks for sharing xx

  9. My labour was 13 hours.
    I didn’t have a birth plan
    I had a epidural
I swore I wouldn’t have any more kids and Now I really would love to have this experience again 😜 One world for birth experience is: empowering

    1. The best word Florence!!
Haha funny how things change as soon as the pain disappears.
Thanks so much for sharing xx

  10. My labour was…1.5 hours (it was fast and furious) first birth, 4 hours second birth

I had a birth plan……yes, I planned everything with my doula, but my doula didn’t make it to either birth.

I USED my birth plan…..nope. I wanted a water birth, didn’t make it in time for either.

I took some sort of pain relief offered…..No, I was screaming for water or gas with my second but the midwife didn’t get it for me.

During labour I swore I’d never have another child (but I did)……I never swore this, I knew I wanted a second one.

If I could tell you ONE thing about birth it would be……Get a doula

    1. A Doula would definitely be an amazing support!
Glad everything turned out well even though it didn’t go to plan.
Thanks so much for sharing xx

  11. # 1 under 5 hours
    # 2 under 4 hours

    # 1 no real birth plan
    # 2 get to the hospital on time!

    # 1 No pain relief, no time by the time I got to the hospital!
    # 2 No pain relief, gas wasn’t working in my suit!

Actually really enjoyed both birth experiences, and pretty much said to the husband straight after “I could do that again”.

If I could tell you one thing about birth it would be try to relax and believe in your body and what it can accomplish.

    1. Haha Elizabeth you are a birth warrior!! I told my husband he could have the next one 😂. In all honesty though OUR bodies are truly amazing! Thanks for sharing xx

  12. I don’t actually know how long my births were. I guess they would both have been over 12 hours, both ending in csection

I had a birth plan. I didn’t hand it out and demand everyone follow my instructions, but the process of writing it helped me find a lot of clarity and gave me confidence to advocate for myself when I needed to

I didn’t ask for pain relief but I accepted it when it was offered. After my first my husband and I talked about how keen we were to have another. As soon as our second was born, we knew our family was complete.

If I could tell you one thing about birth, it’s that you are allowed to feel grief if things didn’t work out the way you wanted. You aren’t ungrateful for your happy and healthy baby if you hated for birtg. Don’t let anyone trivialise your feelings, because they matter.

    1. I really love your advice Lauren. Sometimes it’s hard for people to completely understand the importance of “the process” to each individual. But every feeling is important!
Thanks so much for sharing xx

  13. My labour was 5-6 hours

I had a birth plan that we’d created with our doula

I definitely used my birth plan but also didnt rely too heavily on it as we all know that things change, particularly during labor. But it’s important for your support team to know, in the heat of the moment, the kind of birth you’re aiming for

I didn’t take any pain relief.. I really wanted to experience birth in its entirety

If I could tell you ONE thing about birth it would be…… ‘go in empowered! Women were designed to give birth and we are perfectly designed for it. Trust in your body and you will nail it’ 😘
